Burnout is real!
Burnout is real and your leaders and/or some of your people could be experiencing it. It may show up as lethargy, negativity, loss of productivity or disengagement.
What looks like an “attitude problem” may actually have burn-out at its root, especially if the behaviour is out of character for the individual.
According to World Health Organization, “Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and 3) reduced professional efficacy. Burnout refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life. “
If you see this happening, postponing having a conversation with your employee can create a much larger issue. Make the 1:1 time to ask them how they are doing and really listen.
This is not the time for giving critical feedback. It’s the time for showing support by valuing what they have to say and asking questions to find out how you can help.
